Shared from the NSAA page: We are so lucky to have Jerry as a central part of the Cougar Family! Thank you Jerry for all you do!
⏫⏩ The Nebraska School Activities Association is proud to recognize Jerry Smyth of Central Valley High School as this week’s Above and Beyond Award nominee. For many years, Jerry Smyth has been an indispensable member of the Central Valley school community. As the sole driver of the Central Valley Cougar Bus, a 60-passenger utility bus used for student activities, Jerry ensures that students arrive safely at games, competitions, and events across Nebraska. His calm demeanor, patience, and cheerful attitude have made him a favorite among students. Before every away event, one of the first questions asked is, “Are we riding on the Cougar Bus with Jerry?” This speaks volumes about the trust and rapport he has built with generations of students. Riding with Jerry is more than transportation—it’s an experience filled with safety, encouragement, and a sense of fun that students remember long after they leave Central Valley.
Jerry’s tireless efforts exemplify the very spirit of the Above and Beyond Award. He is a quiet hero whose work is essential to the success of Central Valley’s activities, ensuring that students have the opportunities, guidance, and support they need to thrive. Central Valley High School, its students, staff, and the broader community are immeasurably better because of Jerry Smyth. His dedication, integrity, and heart for service leave a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

Hello Cougar Nation. This is a friendly reminder that it is against the law to pass a school bus when the stop arm is extended.....all vehicles traveling BOTH DIRECTIONS are required to stop. Please read the following message in regard to the Nebraska Law. Thank you for your attention to this detail and for helping us keep our students safe!
Nebraska law is clear:
• Yellow flashing lights mean a school bus is preparing to stop. Drivers must slow down to 25 mph or less and be ready to stop.
• Red flashing lights with an extended stop arm mean drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop. Vehicles may not move until the bus retracts its stop arm, the red lights stop flashing, and the bus begins moving again.
The Penalty for Violations
Passing a stopped school bus with its stop arm extended is not only dangerous—it’s illegal.
• Violators face a misdemeanor offense and can be fined up to $500, similar to the penalty for a first-time DUI.
• Law enforcement across Nebraska takes these violations seriously, and officers are on the lookout during the school year.
Why It Matters
Children are unpredictable. A student may drop something, cross in front of the bus, or step out suddenly. Stopping when required gives kids the space and safety they need. A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret.

The leprechaun traps at CVE didn’t quite do the trick this year! He still managed to sneak in overnight and leave a bit of mischief behind in our classrooms. Better luck next year, students. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Cougar Nation!
